How much does AI image generation cost for designers?

At Google’s real Gemini rates, an AI image costs $0.07–$0.24 — a designer generating 500 images a month pays about $50.40, metered, on their own key. Subscription tools resell the same model at a mark-up, steepest on entry tiers: Google’s $0.0672 image resells for $0.42 on Veras Starter (6.2×). The billing route decides where your money goes — not the technology.

What is the average cost of creating a single AI-generated image?

On a metered API — where you can actually see the price — an image costs a known number of cents. These are the rates Google's rates, verified July 2026 against Google’s pricing page:

Google’s published per-image Gemini rates by model and resolution
Model1K2K4K
Gemini 3.1 Flash Image (Nano Banana 2)$0.0672$0.1008$0.1512
Gemini 3 Pro Image (Nano Banana Pro)$0.1344$0.1344$0.24

Subscription platforms don’t publish a per-image price at all — you buy a plan or credits and divide. That opacity is where markup lives, and it’s why the honest comparison below starts from list prices.

How do subscription plans for AI image generation services compare in price?

List prices below verified July 2026 from each tool’s public pricing page. Mark-up divides the plan’s effective per-image price by Google’s published Nano Banana 2 rate at the resolution each plan quotes — $0.0672 at 1K (Veras, Rendair, Fenestra), $0.1008 at 2K (Project Dream, mnml.ai):

What would your monthly volume cost through a reseller?

Pick a tool and drag the slider. The calculator prices your volume at Google’s published rate for the model the tool resells, then against the cheapest monthly plan that covers the same volume — the gap is the mark-up, in dollars:

Veras quotes its quotas in 1K images and its credits are shared with video, so the image counts are ceilings — the real mark-up can only be higher. Beyond the top tier we stack top-tier plans. Google's side comes from the same pricing engine myda bills with.

On myda the left-hand column is the entire bill — Google bills your own key at its published rate, and generation is never marked up on any tier. Your models and resolutions will differ — the savings calculator runs the full maths on live, verified rates, and the pricing page shows what the flat fee does and doesn’t cover. Taking the direct route needs a Google API key — a five-minute setup.

Cost questions designers actually ask

Are there AI image generation services with free tiers for limited use?
Yes. myda's Free tier is $0 forever — up to 30 images a day at up to 2K resolution on your own Google API key, paying only Google's metered cost per image.
Is it cheaper to generate Nano Banana 2 images with Veras or with your own Google API key?
Your own key, at any volume. Veras resells the same Google model at a mark-up — its Starter plan works out at roughly 6× Google's published per-image rate, and even its top tier stays above 3×. With your own key, Google bills you at its real price and myda adds no mark-up on any tier. See the full cost comparison →
Do AI image generation costs vary depending on image resolution or complexity?
Yes — resolution is the main cost driver on metered APIs, but myda does not add any mark-up. Google bills image output by tokens, so a 2K or 4K image costs more than a 1K one; prompt complexity adds only fractions of a cent in input tokens. See Google's current rates →
How much does it cost to generate images for commercial use with AI?
Google's paid Gemini API permits commercial use of outputs, so anything you generate through your own API key is yours to use in client work.
